New Year, New Smile

Start a Year of Healthy Teeth

As the New Year rolls in, you probably have already started reflecting on 2014 and started thinking about your new goals for 2015. As you brainstorm your New Year’s resolutions, don’t forget about how you can improve your oral health and your overall health. Here at Foothill Dental, your Salt Lake City Dentists, we give you some goals that will help you achieve a healthier you.

Eat Healthy. Having a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables is important, not only to your overall health, but to your teeth. Crunchy foods like apples and nuts are nature’s way to help clean plaque from your teeth. They are also full of nutrition and antioxidants that help protect your teeth and gums from harmful bacteria. Simply add a fruit or vegetable to your meal to increase your intake. Instead of a candy bar, opt for some raw almonds.

Floss. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, only 13.5% of Americans floss on a daily basis. By neglecting to floss, you are missing about a third of your teeth’s surface. This can lead to gum disease and tooth loss. Make flossing a priority by flossing before you brush. It will hold you more accountable to floss and also helps the toothpaste reach in between your teeth.

Quit or Limit Tobacco Products. Not only does tobacco harm your health, it is also horribly unhealthy to your mouth. Tobacco products can cause teeth discoloration, gum disease, cavities, bad breath and cancer. Tobacco users are also twice as prone to losing their teeth when compared to non-users. By quitting or drastically limiting tobacco usage, the chances of teeth loss, gum disease and cancer decrease significantly. Start slowly as quitting cold turkey may be difficult. Discuss quitting tobacco with your Salt Lake City Dentists, Drs. Stohl, and your family doctor if you are struggling to quit. They will be able to help you and recommend what is best for you.

Visit your Dentist. Generally, you should see your Salt Lake City Dentists at least twice a year, every six months. With the New Year beginning, don’t forget to schedule your appointment for a check-up. A visit to your dentist allows your dentist to discuss possible oral health issues with you before they become something major. Your dentist can also discuss with you on how to improve your oral health regimen.

Drs. Stohl, your Salt Lake City Dentists at Foothill Dental hope that you incorporate these goals into your New Year’s resolution for a new smile. We’re glad that you made us a part of your year. We look forward to seeing you and your family in 2015. Call us at (801) 582-5787 or Contact us to schedule your bi-annual dental check-up.

Halloween Candy Alternatives

We all know that Halloween is centered around giving and receiving candy. But we also know that sugary food is not good for teeth. This year we encourage everyone to take their part in preventative oral care by handing out candy alternatives. Your Salt Lake City Dentists have compiled a short list for your options.

Stickers. Spooky Halloween themed stickers can be fun and creative. They come in a variety of designs and are easy to hand out. Stickers are also typically cheaper than candy.

Toys. Plastic toys instead of candy are another great alternative and also cheap. By handing out toys, you are standing out from the crowd.

Sugar-free Gum. If you're a little hesitant about straying too far from Halloween norms, gum is a great substitution. It can often be mistaken by children for a form of candy. Choose sugar-free gum to promote oral health.

Call us at (801) 582-5787 for more Halloween ideas and see how we're celebrating this year. If you have more ideas on what other Halloween alternatives can be handed out, let us know in the comments below!

How to Floss Your Teeth

The surfaces that are between teeth are not accessible to brush; therefore, the best way to clean them is by flossing. The frequency of flossing is like brushing and ideally after each meal, though one time a day (before going to bed) is the minimum necessary.

To start, cut a piece of dental floss (approximately 2 feet). Wrap both sides of the floss around your middle fingers. Using your index and thumb, glide the floss in between all your teeth one by one. When flossing, make sure you are not cutting your gums. The goal is to clean the teeth surfaces, not the gums. In the space in between teeth, press the floss against each side of the tooth (hug the tooth) and gently move it back and forth and up and down. Then move to the opposite surface of the adjacent tooth.
